Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how the Text to CAD Chrome extension ("Extension", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our service. We are committed to safeguarding your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

1. What the Extension Does

Text to CAD is an AI-powered tool that lets you generate parametric 3D CAD models from natural-language descriptions. You type a description of a mechanical part or assembly, and the Extension communicates with our backend service to produce a 3D model you can preview, tweak, and export in industry-standard formats (STEP, IGES, BREP, STL).

2. Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum data required to provide the service:

  • Text descriptions — the prompts you type to describe a CAD model. These are sent to our backend server for AI model generation and may be stored with job and chat records so we can return generation results, support chat history, operate the service, and troubleshoot issues during beta testing.
  • Model preferences — your choice of AI model (Flash or Pro) is sent with each request so we can route it to the correct processing pipeline.
  • Parameter adjustments — when you tweak design parameters (dimensions, angles, counts), these values are sent to regenerate the model and may be stored with the related job.
  • Contact and billing inquiries— if you choose to contact us from the Extension, we collect the email address and optional message you submit so we can respond.

We do not collect payment information, browsing history, location, or data from websites you visit. The Extension does not require user accounts or authentication of any kind.

3. How We Use Your Data

Data you provide is used exclusively to:

  • Generate CAD code and 3D models from your text descriptions.
  • Regenerate models when you adjust parameters.
  • Export models in the format you select.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or ad targeting. Generation requests are shared with AI infrastructure providers as described in the Third-Party Services section so the core functionality of the Extension can work.

4. Local Data Storage

The Extension stores the following data locally on your device using your browser's IndexedDB storage:

  • Chat message history (your prompts and generated responses).
  • Generated 3D model data and CadQuery code.
  • Thumbnail previews of your models (rendered locally using your GPU via WebGL).
  • Design parameter tables for each session.

This local history is stored in your browser's IndexedDB database and is not synced by the Extension to any separate cloud account. Prompts, generated model data, and parameter changes that you submit for generation are also sent to our backend as described above. You can delete individual local sessions from within the Extension at any time, or clear all Extension data through your browser settings.

5. Extension Permissions

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

  • Host permission — access to our backend API server to send your text descriptions for AI processing and receive generated CAD models in response. The Extension communicates only with our own server and no other websites.

The Extension does not request permissions to access your browsing history, read or modify web page content, access your tabs, use cookies, access your camera or microphone, or read data from any website you visit.

6. Third-Party Services

Our backend uses OpenRouter and underlying third-party AI model providers to generate CadQuery code from your descriptions. Your prompts, current model code, and related parameters may be forwarded to these providers solely for model generation and refinement. These providers process data according to their own privacy policies and data handling terms.

7. Analytics and Tracking

The Extension does not include advertising analytics, tracking pixels, fingerprinting, or cross-site tracking. Our backend records operational data such as anonymous session IDs, usage events, billing inquiries, and server logs needed to run and improve the service during beta testing.

8. External Links

The Extension opens our website (text-to-cad.uk) in two cases: once when you first install the Extension (a welcome page), and once if you uninstall it (a feedback page). These are simple web page navigations and do not transmit any personal data or Extension data to the website.

9. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the data transmitted between the Extension and our backend server. Communication with our server uses encrypted connections. Locally stored data is protected by your browser's built-in security mechanisms and is accessible only to the Extension.

10. Data Retention

Text descriptions, generated code, generated model data, parameters, usage events, and contact inquiries may be retained on our backend for service operation, billing/credit accounting, support, abuse prevention, and debugging. Server logs during beta testing may include prompt snippets, AI responses, or generated code. Local chat history, models, and thumbnails stored by the Extension remain on your device and can be deleted from within the Extension or through your browser settings.

11. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. The updated policy will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

13. Contact Us

If you have any questions, concerns, or requests regarding this Privacy Policy or our data practices, please contact us at [email protected].
